Transparent Trespasses: Exhibit of New Fiber Work by Linda Gass

Redwood City, CA (July 5, 2002) Fiber artist Linda Gass is having a solo show entitled "Transparent Trespasses" at The Main Gallery in Redwood City from July 31 through September 1, 2002. The opening reception will be on Sunday August 4 from 4-7 p.m. featuring the mesmerizing music of The Tony Khalife Group.

Transparent Trespasses is Linda's newest work bringing focus and awareness to creating sustainable water resource management in California. "We have trespassed on our natural resources and wilderness areas to create non-sustainable solutions for providing water to our communities. My new fiber works encourage us to see through our current practices and to begin thinking about new sustainable solutions." said Gass. Linda uses transparency both literally and metaphorically in her pieces. Some are constructed using transparent silks while others allow new light to shine through to our thinking.

The fiber pieces in "Transparent Trespasses" consist of wall hangings, art quilts and wearable art. Linda combines a variety of techniques to create her quilts and wall hangings: transferred images
of her photographs, hand written words, embedded glass pebbles, traditional hand and machine quilting, trapunto and hand painted silk. She uses an ancient Japanese technique of wax resist dyeing called Roketsu-zome to create her hand painted silks. The process dates back to 710 AD and was used to add patterning to kimono silks. Layers of silk dyes and special smooth wax are applied with a brush to create the designs.

Linda Gass, a resident of Los Altos, made the switch from software development to fiber artist 8 years ago. She graduated from Stanford University with a BS in Mathematics and an MS in Computer Science and worked in the software industry for 10 years. She began painting silk
and making art quilts 8 years ago and now exhibits her work in international juried shows and galleries nationwide. She won the Quilt National Rookie Award for her quilt "After the Goldrush" in 1999. She travels extensively in the wilderness areas of the western United States where she finds much of the inspiration for her work. She is also an active community volunteer, serving on the boards of the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles and the National
Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, She is a member of the wilderness search and rescue team, the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit and teaches Emergency Medical Technician skills at Foothill and Mission Colleges.
