Bay Area Artist Terri Wilson Moore's new series of pastel paintings explores this theme in her show titled "Intimate Spaces, Private Places," that will be held at The Main Gallery in Redwood City from April 16 to May 18, 2003. In conjunction, ceramic artist Susan Wolf will be showing her new works, titled "Water and Light."

When asked about the inspiration for "Intimate Spaces, Private Places," Moore replied, "I heard a report that said more people are staying at home as a result of terrorist threats and it occurred to me that as people retreated into the perceived safety of their homes they were at the same time withdrawing from their communities. Instead of bringing someone a sense of peace and well being this could instead lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness."

In her new paintings, Moore invites the viewer into intimate interior spaces filled with rich jewel like colors and bright patterns, then creates a counterpoint within this cozy environment using lonely figures to represent the tension we may all be feeling. The effect is heightened by using doorways and windows to symbolize the tunnel vision we often experience during troubled times that narrows our perspective of the world.

Moore, whose representational working style is often filled with symbolism, creates work that appeals to a wide audience. The paintings in this new series are smaller than her previous work, reflecting the more intimate nature of the topic. Moore joined The Main Gallery in 2001 and has
participated in a number of local shows and events.

The Main Gallery is located at 1018 Main Street, Redwood City, CA. The gallery is owned and operated by the artists and features original Fine Arts and Crafts. Open 11 to 4 on Wed. to Fri. and 10 to 3 Sat. and Sun. Call 650-701-1018.
