Menlo Park ceramic artist Pixie Couch has colors on her mind for the holiday season as she gives a new twist on her classic design of clay boxes. Couch, who likes to say she ’s a folk potter, (that is, she makes pots for folks) creates small boxes that curve and twist. Some have long legs and others have wonderfully inlaid shapes of seashells and faces. Inside, there ’s room for an idea or a small thought.
Redwood City & Woodside artist and metal sculptor Tom De Hoog gives a whole new take on holiday colors with his innovative wall sculptures during the 7th annual holiday show at The Main Gallery. De Hoog applies his own approach to the concept of metal sculpture outside of the more mainstream metal art community. His use of the weave as a central focus allows his viewer something visually familiar and recognizable. De Hoog combines layers of color and texture within each artistic endeavor, to add shadow and weight, and to satisfy on a deeper level. The work’s attractions become more apparent over time because of his use of unusual materials and the way he handles the contours, finishes and patinas.
