For Redon, the Cast Acrylic technique opens the door to printmaking without a press. The process is new to Redon, which she learned from Joseph Zirker, “who is the most innovative printmaker I know,” she said. The unusual process is another avenue to explore the potential of monotype printing, this time with the use of acrylics. Until now, fast drying acrylics and printmaking were not compatible. Most artists using acrylics have observed how easy it was to peel off the paint from a slick surface such as glass or china. When painted on an appropriate surface (in this case a polyethylene plate), acrylic films can then be lifted, very much like the lifting of a cast form from a mold. Various water-based media can be combined in this unique process. Redon observes that in the world of monotypes, “rules” are constantly being broken and “conventions” are disappearing, opening the way to this revolutionary form of printmaking without a press. With this process, artists can be free from the expensive and cumbersome hardware of printmaking “I’m still absorbing the process, so my work is still experimental,” Redon said. “The search is full of surprises, pitfalls and joys.” |
