It’s all about clay in the upcoming show at The Main Gallery, so naturally, it’s “Mainly Clay.” The show opens
February 18 and closes March 22, with a reception for the artists on Saturday February 21st, from
6
to
8 p.m.
Jeff Carlick, Pixie Couch, Doris Fischer-Colbrie, Corinna Mori, Nina Koepcke, and Susan Wolf present work that ranges from functional to sculptural, from elegant to whimsical.
Pots that function in everyday use are the focus of Couch’s work, which is mostly functional porcelain using layered glazes and decorative brushwork. Carlick’s work is mostly alternative raku, creating vessels that are strictly decorative low-fired pieces, some with iridescent colors, some with stark blacks and whites and others with a rainbow of oranges and yellows. When working in clay, Corinna Mori is mindful of creating a piece of art for everyday use how it will feel in the hand, how it will fulfill a need and which glaze will produce the most suitable finish.
Clay is endlessly malleable and lends itself to many different approaches used by the various personalities of those who work in it. Nina Koepcke's sculptural work draws inspiration from nursery rhymes, fairy tales, verbal and visual puns. Susan Wolf approaches clay from a little different angle, a sense of humor and whimsy and free-flowing design. She enjoys clay’s immediacy and its responsiveness.
